Back again...

We are back in Europe for six weeks this summer.

Our house exchange family in the Netherlands offered us their new home in Leeuwarden, Netherlands this summer. It was an offer we couldn't pass up. Leeuwarden is a small city with about 90,0000 people, just 12 kilometres from our previous home exchange location in Grou.

We arrived in Amsterdam on June 30, and took the two and a half hour train ride to our destination. While we didn't sleep on the plane, the train quietly rocked us to sleep. Good thing Leeuwarden was the end of the line or else we may have still been sound asleep.

Getting settled.

We have a wonderful row house to live in, just minutes from the centrum and the picturesque city park with its charming canal. We have a cute little '78 VW Rabbit to drive. A sweet ride, great on gas :)

On July 1 (Delmer's birthday), we celebrated by having lunch out at our favorite restaurant. Check out my smoked salmon sandwich, it was as good as it looked too. On day two we returned to Grou to visit some of our old friends. Today we went shopping at the market in the centrum, where you can buy locally produced cheeses, meats, fish, breads, flowers and more.

Gosh the spiders are big here!

Found an ugly spider the size of a Canadian toonie guarding the bathroom door last night. I had to call in the troops (that would be my beloved Delmer) to remedy the situation. What's the old wives tale about killing a spider anyway?

What's in store next?

There are a lot of things to do and see by merely living the life here in Leeuwarden and nearby towns and villages here in Friesland. We plan on driving into nearby Germany in search of some tasty schnitzel in a week or two. A few of days exploring Belgium is gaining appeal. And, we are checking on last minute three to four day travel deals to places we haven't been before. We are leaning toward something in Ireland or Scotland, but are open to other locations as well.

We will keep you posted along the way.

Delmer & Eileen
