Skutsjesilen

Yesterday was skutsjesilen in Sneek.

We took the ship from Earnewald, along with about 200 avid race enthusiasts, in the morning under a forecast of rain showers for the day. This does not stop the race, only wind does that. The canals to Sneek were quiet as first, but as we neared our destination, the waterways became busier as boats jockeyed for the perfect spot to view the race.

Eating and drinking rituals are unique. As we left the Earnewald haven, most everyone indulged in appelkak (similar to apple pie) or strawberry cake (heavenly) with or without slag room (whipped cream)
Then came the first round of alcohol drinks, consisting of beers with a few of the ladies having wine or local drink called Advocat (eggnog with a heck of a kick). Lunch was served before the race began.

As the weather man had forecasted, it rained for much of the race which forced us to stay inside the boat. The race was won by Earnewald, and the racing series by our favorite Grou, hip hop hooray!

On our return trip to Earnewald we  managed to find space under the narrow canopy on the outside viewing deck. We took in the fresh air and view the beautiful Friesland landscape. We also struck up a great conversation with a young lady, who offered us some of her Lays potato chips. In a nut shell this explains the warmth and friendliness of people in Friesland and it is one of the major reasons why we have returned to this place.

We arrived back at the Earnewald haven a little after 6:00 p. m.
