Skutsjesilen at Sneek

This morning we headed down to Grou's haven to catch the boat to Sneek for the last Skutsjesilen race of the season. We were joined by about 25 other race enthusiasts, many whom were very friendly, and eager to explain the details of this famous race.

We just loved the order that food and drink were consumed in this party atmosphere. We started out with coffee as we waited to leave the Grou haven. This was followed by appeltart (apple pie and whipped cream). Then came beer and Advocat (thick eggnog but with a heck of a kick). We got around to eating the burgers and ham sandwiches in the early afternoon. After the eten, we continued more drenken!

The race at Sneek was to start at 2:00 p.m., but was delayed by insufficient winds until after 3:00 p.m. This was followed by two false starts. In my opinion, the assembling of 14 ships in an orderly start looked more like "herding cats". By 4:00 p.m. the race hadn't got underway, so the race was cancelled. Everyone quickly turned to celebrating the overall series winner, the team from Sneek.

We had a great day anyway, and our new friends and the staff on the boat encouraged us to come back another year.
